Sony Entertainment had lost over $300 to manufacture the Play Station 3 (Shivlov, 2006).
“With the play station 3, you are getting the performance of a supercomputer at the price of an entry-level PC.” Said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director, cost benchmarking services for IHS (Shivlov, 2006). Preliminary have estimated that it with the combined materials required and the manufacturing of the Play Station 3 it would cost $805.85 for the model equipped with a 20GB hard disk drive (HDD), and then it would cost Sony $840.35 for the 60GB HDD version. The Preliminary estimates actually don’t include the cost of things such as the controller, cables, packaging, freight or the profit from the console from any resellers, e.g. Best Buy (Shivlov, 2006). ISuppli has been led to believe that Sony is now encouraging stockholders to purchase the more expensive model of the 60GB version, because with every Play Station 3 that is manufactured and then sold, Sony has lost $306.85. Whereas the loss for the more expensive version is only $241.35 according to any teardown analysis of the Play Station 3 with the comparison of the 60GB and the 20GB (Shivlov, 2006). Inside the large warehouse, is a large open space with machines strewn about, the machines are used and manned by the employee’s to manufacture the Play Station 3. Employee’s that get close to the Play Station 3 and check how each of them work, keep gloves on when handling them. The workspace is clean and enough space for each of the employees to move freely, until they get closer to the machines where the space becomes more cramped (Monier, 2013). The creation of the motherboard and other parts like the CD laser, are made by the machines. The case that protects the motherboard and other pieces are all hand made by the employees (Monier, 2013). |
